It can cost companies a great deal of money to heat and cool their office spaces but Israeli start-up, Pythagoras Solar, says it has come up with an energy efficient solution. The company has developed a double-paned window embedded with solar cells, which can generate electricity for the building while also acting as a blind, shading those inside from the sunlight and keeping them cool. CEO Gonen Fink says their concept is unique. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CEO AND CO-FOUNDER OF PYTHAGORAS SOLAR, GONEN FINK, SAYING: "We generate solar power but at the same time we also shade the building and improve the energy efficiency of the building and all this in transparent window that allows people to view the outside of the building and to get a lot of light, day light into the building, further eliminating the need for artificial lighting." With a price tag of around 100 U.S dollars per square foot, a window like this is more expensive than your average solar panel. But Fink says a return on the investment could be expected in around three to five years, unlike conventional solar panels which can take twice as long to pay for themselves. Chief Technology Officer Itay Baruchi says their design will transform the new energy market. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CO-FOUNDER AND CTO (CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER) OF PYTHAGORAS SOLAR ITAY BARUCHI, SAYING: "I think we were looking for a simple solution which will transform the way energy generated today, solar energy generated today. And this is how we got to this type of very simple optics, very simple manufacturing technologies - not transforming the whole way that the solar industry is manufacturing but upgrading it to a new type of solution which is revolutionized." The company has received recognition and a 100,000 dollar award from General Electric for its invention and is in the process of mass producing the window with more than ten million dollars raised from investors. They're now targeting architectural companies and owners of commercial properties in the hope that they too will see the light. Basmah Fahim, Reuters.
