If Portuguese had any doubt their country has been thrown a financial lifeline they're now reminded each time they catch public transport. From Monday catching a ferry or bus is 15 percent more expensive. The cost of trains has gone up by a quarter. SOUNDBITE: PUBLIC TRANSPORT USER, LURDES BASTOS, SAYING (Portuguese): "We already pay too much money for a monthly pass and I don't know where this will stop, really I don't know." Travellers are paying more because of the 78-billion euro bailout Portugal got from the European Union and International Monetary Fund to stop going bankrupt. The terms of that deal include tax hikes, spending cuts and labour market reforms. Greece has been dealing with its own financial crisis for longer, but resistance to government reform remains strong. Taxi drivers have gone on strike over plans to open their industry up to competition. After tipping more than 110 billion euros into Greece, the EU and the IMF want to liberalise around 130 professions in the hope of boosting the economy.
