Gaddafi's spokesman vows resistance

Aug.24 - A spokesman for Muammar Gaddafi's government, vows resistance for weeks or even months. Paul Chapman reports.

PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL RESENDS SCRIPT WITH CORRECTED DATE Libya's rebels have already ransacked Muammar Gaddafi's Tripoli bastion and celebrated victory in the same square where he came to power 42 years ago. Gaddafi's already history in the eyes of the rebels. But the Libyan leader's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim is issuing a defiant message. SOUNDBITE: Moussa Ibrahim, spokesman for Muammar Gaddafi, saying (Arabic) "Despite the presence of the gangs of NATO in some areas of Tripoli, in reality our military, operational and civilian position is very strong and we are capable of continuing fighting not just for days or weeks, but for months or years. We were expecting a conspiracy on this scale and have prepared all the plans to turn Libya into a battlefield for resistance until victory." Despite the jubilant mood in Tripoli the leader of Libya's National Transitional Council says fighting is still going on in other areas. SOUNDBITE: Mahmoud Jibril, executive head of Libya's National Transitional Council, saying (Arabic): "We will not forget our south whilst we are in the middle of these victories tonight, Gaddafi's wrongdoing brigades are intensely shelling the city of Sabha. I don't want my brothers and sisters in all the liberated Libyan cities to forget that Sabha and all the other southern cities which haven't yet been liberated require a helping hand." As the rebels' political leaders prepared for international talks on Wednesday, there were further signs beyond Libya that Gaddafi's regime is collapsing. The Libyan embassies in Mexico and Argentina raised rebel flags and their representatives announced they'd switched allegiance to the rebels. Paul Chapman, Reuters
