Clashes between demonstrators and police broke out in Chile's capital. The violence erupted during the annual march held in remembrance of a military coup which ended the rule of Marxist President Salvador Allende. Youths blocked roads, threw rocks and set fire to piles of trash at intersections. Police used water cannons and teargas. This is the latest social unrest to spring up against the country's current conservative billionaire President. In recent months, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets calling for a greater distribution of income, as copper prices boom. As the world's top producer of the metal, the rise in prices has given the economy a boost. But many ordinary Chileans feel they are not sharing the nation's economic miracle.
