Obama to China: Help rein in North Korea

March 26 - U.S. President Barack Obama says the United States and China have common interest in dealing with North Korea and Iran. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

U.S. President Barack Obama told his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao that both countries have an interest in addressing nuclear standoffs with Iran and China's ally North Korea. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "We both have an interest in making sure that international norms surrounding non-proliferation and preventing destabilizing nuclear weapons is very important" The leaders of the world's two biggest economies met on the sidelines of a 53-nation global nuclear security summit in Seoul. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "I think cooperation and co-ordination between the United States and China is very important not only to the interest of our two countries but to the interest of the world." On Sunday Obama urged Beijing to rein in North Korea instead of quote "turning a blind eye" to its nuclear defiance. He also warned of tighter sanctions if the reclusive state goes ahead with a rocket launch next month. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters.
