Syria's Assad tours former rebel stronghold

March 27 - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad visits a defeated rebel stronghold in the city of Homs, talking to groups of supporters as he toured streets devastated by months of shelling and gunfire. Video from Syrian state television shows Assad walking casually in the Baba Amr district, which was reclaimed by his forces earlier this month after 26 days of heavy bombardment. ASSAD TALKING TO OFFICIAL (Arabic) SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR AL-ASSAD, SAYING: "In all circumstances, we need to follow up on all reconstruction work taking place so things can be done properly. We are not working just because this is the situation. (Worker: 'Of course not, it's an exceptional situation and we are here everyday'.) Look at the resources we currently have and then you should produce a timetable (for the reconstruction), and with this timetable we can keep monitoring. (Man standing nearby, adding: 'We have a comprehensive plan for every direction.'). Let the people know (of your timetable) so citizens can understand when they can expect life to return to normal for them." ASSAD MEETING LOCAL SUPPORTERS WHO SAY: "We are with you until death" ASSAD SPEAKING TO LOCALS: "The state was not late, but gave a chance for (inaudible). But now the state has become involved and security has returned, we all need to work on reconstruction so Baba Amr can be a lot better than it was used to be before." CROWD SHOUTING: "(We only want) God, Syria and Bashar."
