PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL (ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION) Pope Benedict XVI met with Cuban President Raul Castro on Tuesday (March 27) after arriving in Havana from Santiago de Cuba where he paid homage to the country's patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre. Castro greeted the pontiff after his convoy arrived at the Council of State and Ministers. Following an official welcome, Castro and the pontiff held a private meeting for about one hour. Castro presented the Pope with a statue of the Virgin. Pope Benedict is in Cuba to honour the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the venerated Virgin figure, which was found floating in a bay in 1612 by three fishermen and is an important symbol for both the Roman Catholic Church and Santeria, the Afro-Cuban religion that is a legacy of Cuba's slavery era.
