US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced a gift for Japanese Prime Minster Yoshikiko Noda during a dinner in Washington Monday night. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON SAYING: "Tonight, I am pleased to announce a gift of 3,000 dogwood trees for the people of Japan from the American people." (SOUNDBITE) (Japanese) JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER YOSHIHIKO NODA SAYING: "This is a landmark year as it has been 100 years since we first crossed the Pacific and shared our cherry trees. Through our combined response to last year's Great East Japan earthquake we reaffirmed our friendship and now must look to strengthen our ties together. I believe that this is a wonderful chance to plant the seeds of trees that will still be blooming 100 years from now, in much the same way as the relationship between our two countries will be." In 1912 the Japanese gave 3,000 cherry trees to the U.S. Dogwoods, like cherry trees, bloom every spring with white or pink flowers. Every year Washington holds a festival to celebrate the blossoms.
