Tonys nominate Broadway's best, Jessica Simpson has baby girl

May 1 - The day's top showbiz news and headlines including ''Once'' leads the Tony nominations, the MTV Movie Award nominees are announced, and Jessica Simpson is a new mom. Bob Mezan reports.

The Tony Awards have been announced and "Once," the Broadway musical version of a 2006 indie Irish film, led the pack of nominees with eleven nominations, including best musical and best actor and actress for its stars. "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess" and "Nice Work If You Can Get It" follow with ten nominations each and "Peter and the Starcatcher" with nine. Broadway's most expensive show, the 75 million dollar "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark," got only two nominations, for best scenic design and costume. The Tony Awards will be handed out on June 10. From the stage to the silver screen - the nominees for this year's MTV Movie Awards have been announced. "Bridesmaids" garnered eight nominations, as did "The Hunger Games." Both films will vie for movie of the year, along with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," ''The Help" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-Part 1." The awards will be presented on June 03. Jessica Simpson is a new mom. The star has given birth to a baby girl - Maxwell Drew Johnson. The baby was a big one - weighing more than 9 pounds and measuring more than 21 inches. The Kodak Theatre is no more. The venue that has played host to the Oscars for the past decade has been re-named the Dolby Theatre, after the audio company beat out 10 other bidders for the naming rights. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has signed on to continue the awards show there through 2033. Finally, Sacha Baron Cohen arrived in Sydney dressed as his character "The Dictator" - complete with a model-worthy team of female security guards. Cohen joked that he there to hold a meeting with Peter Slipper - whom he called 'Slippery Pete' - Australia's Speaker of the House who is facing allegations of sexual harassment. Bob Mezan, Reuters.
