Hail stones the size of golf balls and almost 70 millimetres of rain in just one hour brought chaos to parts of Gansu province in northwest China.
At least 37 people have been killed.
Rescue teams are looking for 19 people still missing.
The storm hit on Thursday afternoon.
By Friday night state broadcaster CCTV said nearly 30, 000 were evacuated and 40 taken to hospital for treatment.
CCTV said roads were paralysed, power supplies cut in several areas, and some houses were destroyed.
