A taxi driver and his female passenger caught in the torrential floodwaters of a dam were rescued by firefighters in China's southern Hainan province on Thursday (May 31).
The taxi was being driven across the dam when the gushing waters, triggered by heavy rain, washed the vehicle off the road. Both the driver and passenger got out of the car and clung to a pier in the middle of the raging waters.
Firefighters managed to rescue the passenger in the lower reaches of the river after she was washed downstream, but had to wait for a crane to be sent to the site before they were able to reach the trapped driver.
With the help of the crane's lifting arm, rescuers delivered a rope and life vest to the victim.
The driver was pulled to safety after being stranded for about an hour.
