Lonesome George, the last remaining giant tortoise of his kind has died of unknown causes, says the Galapagos National Park. George was believed to be around 100 years old. A symbol of Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, Lonesome George was the last member of a tortoise subspecies from the island of La Pinta. Scientists had tried to get George to mate since 1993, but they were unsuccessful. Giant tortoises can live up to 200 years, and park officials say they will examine George's remains to determine the cause of his death. Elly Park, Reuters.
