Thousands of refugees flee to Uganda, after rebel fighters take over a border town in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. The number of people seeking shelter at this transit center is rising. UNHCR's Jesus Sanchez says they can be accommodated, for now. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNHCR TEAM LEADER IN NYAKABANDE, JESUS SANCHEZ, SAYING: "Before last Thursday we had a population of some 8,000 plus. With this new influx we have over thirteen thousand coming, next to fourteen thousand people. We are still managing in terms of shelter and space, we are managing the situation, we don't have a problem on that side and I would say our challenge now is to relocate as many people as possible." The U.N. estimates that the resurgence of fighting in eastern Congo has displaced more than 200,000 people. Violence has plagued the DRC's North Kivu province since late March, when hundreds of ex-rebels defected from the army in support of a general, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for suspected war crimes. After seizing the eastern town rebels are calling for negotiations with the government. In the meantime, displaced Congolese keep pouring over the border into Uganda. Sharon Reich, Reuters
