ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Who needs a passport when you can go back to the Sixties with Marc Jacobs? Big vertical stripes and bold checks in Op-Art patterns took over the American designer's Spring 2013 runway on Monday (September 10) at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) in New York. The opening look saw a white T-shirt with black piano-key stripes popped over black underpants. The blonde model was reminiscent of Twiggy in her Carnaby Street heyday. Black and white prevailed, with some interludes of beige, dark cherry red and brown. Handbags picked up the mod motif. Sequins outlined the Op-Art stripes and checks on his lean maxi dresses. Car-wash slits to the thigh exposed a lot of leg on one Op-Art maxi dress. And Polka dots came out to play. Marc Jacobs, who designs for his own label and Louis Vuitton, was discovered by Vogue in the 1980s. The winner of numerous CFDA awards, Marc Jacobs is known for appearing in public in outrageous outfits like a sheer lace dress over boxer shorts at the Costume Institute's Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His label is one of the biggest global fashion brands with accessories and fragrances making up a big part of his business. In 2002, the designer got his own star on Fashion's Walk of Fame in the Garment District along New York's Seventh Avenue. For Spring 2013, Marc Jacobs cut tailored jackets short at the rib cage while pencil skirts or pants were slung low on the hips to expose bare midriffs - a trend this season. Another trend - sheer shirts over matching bras - sent the signal that for Spring and Summer 2013, there will be no place to hide. The designer, whose show was presented at the Armory, took a runway bow in a conservative suit and shirt. Singer Ricky Martin, who is starring in the Broadway musical revival of "Evita" was in the front row. MBFW will run through Thursday (September 13) in New York at Lincoln Center and other venues.
