From this ... to this. The Turkish border town of Akcalale, shelled by Syrian forces on Wednesay, is quiet Friday morning. Five people died in Wednesday's mortar attack - the deadliest cross-border incident here since the Syrian uprising began 18 months ago. Turkey responded with an artillery bombardment of Syrian targets for a second day Thursday. Mortars have been landing on Akcalale since last month when rebels seized the Syrian side of the border from government forces. Frightened residents welcomed the military and political retaliation by Ankara. This man says the psychocological toll on children in the town has been very bad but the situation has now improved. Turkey's parliament has stepped up pressure on Syria by authorising more cross-border military action if necessary, though Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said Ankara did not want to start a war with its neighbour.
