Smoke billows across the Syrian-Turkish border as Syria's civil war rages on. A constant barrage of gunfire can be heard in footage shot from Turkey's southern Guvecci village. Other shots show watchtowers formally under the control of Bashar al-Assad now flying the Free Syrian Army's colours. Although Syrian rebels are divided, the government has been unable to land a decisive victory against the fighters in key cities. But the conflict has spilled from Syria's borders into Turkey after a series of mortar attacks hit Turkish cities, including one incident that killed five. This has led once-ally Turkey to retaliate with several rounds of shelling throughout last week and over the weekend. On Sunday, the border towns of Reyhanli and Salqin returned to calm in the wake of clashes the day before. Truck drivers in the area said they now felt safe delivering goods on the Syrian side since several border gates are under rebel control. The ongoing Syrian conflict has claimed the lives of 30,000, according to the United Nations, with no end to the violence in sight.
