Mombasa, Kenya - the scene of a deadly raid on Wednesday morning.
Elite paracommando units from Nairobi shot dead three suspected supporters of the Somali militant group al Shabaab.
Four police officers were seriously injured during the operation near the tourist beach resort, one of whom later died from his wounds in hospital.
Residents nearby said they heard heavy gunfire punctuated by at least two blasts, beginning at 2am and lasting until the early hours of the morning.
A number of suspects were arrested, and grenades, AK-47 rifles and ammunition were found at the scene.
Kenya has been hit by a series of grenade and gun attacks since it sent its troops into Somalia a year ago in pursuit of Islamist al Shabaab militants blamed for kidnapping Kenyans and Western tourists.
