Google shares were slammed after an earnings shocker. The company missed expectations on both revenue and earnings in a report that was mistakenly released hours earlier than Wall Street expected. Rob Cyran of Thomson Reuters Breaking Views. SOUNDBITE: ROB CYRAN, THOMSON REUTERS BREAKING VIEWS (ENGLISH) SAYING: "Google's mobile operations had a horrible result. They had a loss of about $500 million. That's bad on two reasons. First, Google will have to spend some time fixing it. And second is management could be distracted." The mobile arena is where the tech giants must make their mark as phones and tablets edge out desktops and laptops. Microsoft, which reported worse than expected results, is gearing up for October 26th. That's when the software giant releases the Windows 8 operating system for computers and tablets, the same day the software giant rolls out its first Surface tablet. Dan Ackerman of CNET: SOUNDBITE: DAN ACKERMAN, SENIOR EDITOR, CNET (ENGLISH) SAYING: "People always talk about how tablets are the next big thing. People are transitioning to tablets. So far, people like the iPad. I'm not so sure they really love a lot of other tablets or that other tablets really sell well except for the really inexpensive Amazon and Barnes and Noble ones. But if anybody can really mainstream other tablets besides the iPad, it's going to be Microsoft." Ackerman says the tablet is one of several new products from Microsoft as it tries to make sure it doesn't lose more audience to other operating systems already popular in the mobile space. On October 29th for example, Microsoft launches Windows Phone 8, the same day Google is expected to unveil a new Nexus smartphone which is expected to run the new Android 4.2 software called Key Lime Pie. No doubt both Microsoft and Google don't want to be upstaged by Apple Computer which is launching its latest salvo in the mobile space. It's widely expected to unveil a smaller, cheaper version of its popular iPad October 23rd. Sasha Salama, Reuters.
