More often than not these days, there's smoke on the Damascus skyline. Violence in the Syrian capital didn't appear to be letting up ahead of a proposed ceasefire to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.
Tanks could be seen throughout the city in this latest video posted to a social media website that Reuters cannot independently verify. Opposition activists say few expect to see any sort of quiet over the next few days.
Syrian authorities say they've agreed to the ceasefire plan proposed by Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. However, they say they're reserving the right to respond to any attacks from the opposition. A previous ceasefire in April collapsed within days.
