A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala shook the mountainous region of San Marcos state on Wednesday (November 07), destroying homes, crushing cars and trapping residents under rubble.
Television footage showed bodies buried under debris and collapsed buildings as shocked residents struggled to grasp the magnitude of the quake's force that left at least 39 people, amongst them children.
A Red Cross chief said dozens of homes were destroyed in the city of San Marcos alone. Many locals were seriously injured by falling rubble.
Thousands of soldiers have been deployed to help local authorities distribute emergency rations. However, landslides triggered by the earthquake are complicating rescue efforts.
