Today's daily digit is negative 1.8 percent. That's the change in McDonald's same store sales in October- key because it's the first time since March of 2003 that the fast food giant's sales have fallen. So what happened? Blame the weak economy- and stiff competition. Rival Wendy's said its same store sales in the U.S. have been rising. It's been sprucing up its stores and upgrading its image. The McDonald's number isn't a surprise. Just a few weeks ago the world's biggest hamburger chain posted its worst quarterly restaurant sales growth performance in nine years. Sales fell 2.2 percent in the U.S. and Europe, and fell 2.4 percent in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
