With a fanfare worthy of a 2,012-millimeter-long Striezel Christmas cake, Dresden's oldest Christmas market or "Striezelmarkt" gets underway. The city's mayor is the first to taste the traditional cake, which is made from flour, sugar, butter, Jamaican rum and raisins. SOUNDBITE: Ilona Ebert, Christmas Market visitor, saying (German): "It tasted great." SOUNDBITE: Rica Roessler, Christmas Market visitor, saying (German): "It tastes of raisins and is very sweet, right? It's delicious." Christmas markets are a familiar sight all over Germany, with vendors selling everything from handicraft to grilled sausages and gluehwein. But for most visitors, the season is about Christmas spirit and family. SOUNDBITE: Petra Kruepper, Christmas Market visitor, saying (German): "The lights, the decoration. Also, this coming weekend my children are visiting and that alone already is Christmas to me." Dresden's 578th Christmas Market will close on December 24th and organizers expect at least 2 million visitors in the coming weeks.
