So, to give them some much deserved rest and social interaction, a camp was set up in the southern province of Tamil Nadu. Elephant handlers or "mahouts" accompanied their animals for the 48-day break. SOUNDBITE: Dinesh, elephant mahout, saying (Tamil): "At this camp our elephants are given special food with vitamin supplements. The elephants are happy to see each other, as they are lonely at the temples. So we are also happy." Many, eager to see the elephants up close, visited the camp. And besides R&R, sick animals received medical treatment.
