Troops on high alert in Afghanistan following a deadly attack on a US military base. Three Afghan soliders and two civilians died when insurgents assaulted this compound, located in the eastern city of Jalalabad. The battle lasted one - two hours, and left a trail of carnage outside the base, which houses U.S. and other NATO troops. A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force said while the attack was serious, militants were not able to breach the base. Nine insurgents died in the foray, including two suicide bombers who blew themselves up in their cars. The assault comes as the U.S. scrambles to train Afghan troops ahead of a 2014 pullout by coalition forces.
