Jan 21 - US President Barack Obama named General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt to head a new White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. Jon Decker reports.

Aiming to reinforce the message that the second half of his first term will be all about creating jobs, US President Barack Obama named General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt to head a new White House Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "Jeff is somebody who brings a wealth of experience to the table. He is one of the nation's most respected and admired business leaders and that's a reputation he earned over 10 years at the helm of this company." Obama, on a visit to a GE plant in Schenectady, New York, said the new economic advisory panel will focus on promoting growth by investing in business. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "The past two years were about pulling our economy back from the brink. The next two years -- our job now is putting our economy into overdrive." Bringing Immelt on board solidifies Obama's efforts to improve his relationship with the business community, with whom the White House has had strained ties for the last two years.
