A worker from a polio eradication campaign in Pakistan is treated in hospital after he was shot on Wednesday-- the latest in a string of attacks on health workers. Two others were shot fatally, bringing the death toll to eight in two days. Following the violence, the United Nations in Pakistan has pulled all staff involved in the immunization campaign off the streets. It is not clear who is behind the attacks, but some Islamists have long opposed the vaccination campaign, with some saying it's aimed at sterilizing Muslims. The Taliban have repeatedly issued threats against the immunization programme, and health workers say they had calls telling them to stop working with the "infidels". The Taliban denies responsibility for the shootings. Though eradicated in most places, there have been 35 cases of polio in Pakistani children in the last year.
