In New Delhi, a Hindu fire ritual or 'havan' is held to honour the victim of a gang rape.
The 23-year-old medical student died from the severity of her injuries at a hospital in Singapore on Saturday.
A priest officiating the ceremony said the ritual is to pray for the departed, and for better protection for Indian women.
The brutal rape on board a bus sparked massive and sometimes violent protests across the country.
The government was forced to at least verbally acknowledge the problem of rape and violence against women in India.
The parents of the victim accompanied her body as it arrived home.
Six suspects have been charged with murder after her death.
