These Renault workers say they're fighting to save their jobs, their employer says it needs to get more competitive. Workers blockaded the carmaker's plant in Flins, near Paris. The protest was organised by the French CGT union. Ali Kaya, the plant's General Secretary, said it's a warning. SOUNDBITE: Renault Flins CGT General Secretary, Ali Kaya, saying (French) : "We're saying to them: 'If you maintain your project to keep suppressing jobs and degrading the working conditions of employees, we'll make you pay, we'll make you pay dearly. Because we are determined, we won't let ourselves be walked all over." French carmaker Renault has announced a plan to cut some 7500 jobs on its home patch by 2016. It says it needs to boost competitiveness as the slump in its domestic and European markets shows no sign of easing. Workers of rival carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroen have also been protesting against the possible loss of 8,000 possible jobs. Peugeot's planned cuts have suffered a legal setback after extra court-ordered consultations with workers. Sophie Nicolle works at the Flins Renault plant. SOUNDBITE: Renault employee, Sophie Nicolle, saying (French): "We're defending our salaries -- employment, salaries, the future generations, all the factories that are shutting down. Because as soon as Flins closes at least six others will also be affected and the lorry drivers won't have any work either." Production stoppages like this one were held at Renault have been taking place around the country for some time. Tense negotiations between the carmakers and the unions have resumed. But without a strong turnaround in European car sales, thousands more workers may find themselves out on the road.
