In the protracted conflict of eastern Ukraine, THIS is no man's land.
Reuters accompanied Ukraine's National Guard on a reconnaissance mission in the Luhansk region on Thursday, following the Donbass Battalion and the 24th Mechanized Brigade as they carry out a sweep in the empty village of Orikhove.
The men are here after reports alleging separatists had entered no-man's land and fighters from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic were using railway tracks to ferret supplies through the village.
The government forces destroy the railway tracks -- the transportation link, for now, is down.
Last week, a rebel advance shattered a five-month truce in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian separatists have been in an armed conflict for independence and closer ties to neighboring Russia.
A military spokesman says five Ukrainians soldiers had been killed and 29 wounded in fighting over just the past 24 hours.
The casualties, of course, are not limited to troops and rebels.
At least three civilians were killed and two wounded in the eastern city of Donetsk, after a shelling attack on the outskirts of the city in the early morning.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONETSK RESIDENT, ALEXANDER, SAYING:
"Things are awful, I don't know....One goes to this part of town like it is the frontline. I think in recent days it shows that they want to eliminate, destroy or kill us."
One man's interview is interrupted with sounds of more shelling.
These are the latest casualties in a conflict that's killed some 5,000 people and forced more than a million to flee.
