Malian troops have encountered gunfire and and ambushes but it was little preparation for what happened in Bamako --- an attack by their fellow soldiers.
SOUNDBITE: NOEL DOUGNON, resident at military camp neighborhood, saying:
"There were two women hurt, they were shooting at everyone like that. The people in the neighborhood figured out what was going on, and they started shooting at everyone."
Stunned locals confirmed reports that a muntinous unit of paratroopers had opened fire on fellow soldiers and civilians.
Smoke in the sky above the base where the fighting was taking place. Many fear the mutiny in Bamako will be a setback to the major gains the French led military operation has made in the northern part of the country.
