North Korea state media announced Tuesday the country has successfully conducted a nuclear test.
South Korean officials confirmed the test-- the third since 2006.
Outgoing South Korean President, Lee Myung-bak called an emergency National Security Council meeting to discuss the incident. Defense Ministry officials said the country is on high alert.
In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cut short a meeting to address parliament. (nats) And instructed people to prepare for the unforeseen.
For now, the South Korean , North Korean border is quiet.
In file footage seen here North Korean engineers work at a nuclear lab... North Korean state media said Tuesday's test used a miniature nuclear device with quote 'greater explosive force'.
A nuclear monitoring agency said the magnitude of the test was 4.9.
