Smoke rises from the compound of a senior government official in Pakistan where a gunfight on Monday killed four security guards and at least one militant. Gunmen raided the compound of top political official Muttahirzeb Khan in Peshawar, where tribal leaders and members of political parties had gathered to hold talks. Witnesses say they heard two explosions followed by heavy gunfire. Officials suspect the attackers, who were wearing police uniforms, were suicide bombers. There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack but the Pakistani Taliban have carried out similar operations. Militants have stepped up attacks across Pakistan just months ahead of a national election. On Saturday, 85 people, most of them Shi'ites, were killed in the south-western city of Quetta in an attack blamed on Sunni militants.
