The Oscar red carpet rolls out

Feb. 21 - The red carpet made its debut on Hollywood Boulevard as preparations for the 85th Academy Awards kick in to high gear. Elly Park reports.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow striking a pose on the Oscar red carpet. Year after year, the famous carpet rolls out on Hollywood Boulevard days ahead of the actual ceremony because of its sheer size - it stretches over 40,000 square feet or 3,700 square meters. Joe Lewis is head of production for the Academy Awards. Soundbite: Joe Lewis, Oscars Production Head, saying (English) "It takes about 600 man hours to do all the carpet for the Academy Awards, not just specifically here on the boulevard." More accurately it takes 40 men about ten days to lay the regal rug. After the show another big job is at hand; preserving it for next year. Soundbite: Joe Lewis, Oscars Production Head, saying (English) "We'll keep what's good and we'll send it to the warehouse and have it cleaned up for next year and then supplement what we need for next year. But the carpet is specific to the Academy Awards, it's an Academy red. It's a dye lot that someone way above my pay scale decided on a long time ago, so that's what we use." These men a have a few days left to finish the flooring for the annual awards show, which will take place on Sunday February 24.
