At least nine people have been found dead following a powerful blizzard that swept through the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido over the weekend. Rescue workers near the town of Nakashibetsu uncovered a family of four - all died in their car as it was engulfed in snow. The 40-year-old mother and her three children died of carbon monoxide poisoning after their vehicle's exhaust pipe became clogged with snow. In the same town a 23-year-old woman was found frozen to death near her stalled car - it's believed she tried to escape before succumbing to the cold. In the town of Yubetsu, a 53-year-old man was found dead in a snowy field. He had wrapped his body around his nine-year-old daughter to protect her from the cold. His daughter was found alive but suffering from severe frostbite. Japanese media said many local residents described Saturday's blizzard as the worst they could remember, with zero visibility and hurricane-force winds adding to the already freezing temperatures.
