PLEASE NOTE: THIS EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL (ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: An earthquake over the weekend in China's southwestern Yunnan province injured 30 people and forced more than 12,000 local residents to leave the devastated area after their homes and buildings were destroyed, state media reported on Monday (March 4). Official state news agency Xinhua said no deaths had been reported, but three people were in serious condition. More than 80,000 homes and water and power lines were damaged in the 5.5-magnitude earthquake, which struck Liantie township on Sunday (March 3) afternoon, Xinhua said quoting Yunnan's Civil Affairs Department. Footage from Chinese state television CCTV showed rescue workers searching through the rubble. According to Xinhua, more than 400 policemen, fire fighters and soldiers were dispatched to the disaster site. CCTV said that temporary housing had been set up with the help of the local military. Natural disasters are not uncommon in the remote communities of southwest China. Analysts say that buildings in China's more remote regions are often erected with little regard to construction standards.
