A strong winter storm that has already hit the upper midwestern U.S states moved towards the East Coast Tuesday blanketing Chicago in heavy snow.
A bitter March wind whipped fiercely as pedestrians made their way through a white haze of thick wet flakes, while more than one-thousand flights were cancelled at Chicago-area airports.
The weather also forced school closings and flight cancellations in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As the late-season storm moves east, it's expected to merge with another system and hit mid-Atlantic states Wednesday.
The National Weather Servic predicts Washington, DC, will see its largest snowfall in two years.
