The Daily Digit is $150.2 million. That's how much Walt Disney's big-budget 3D movie "Oz the Great and Powerful" made around the world last weekend. Ticket sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters rounded up $80.3 million for the best debut so far this year. The remaining $69.9 million came from international markets. The opening numbers for "Oz" provided a strong start for the $200-million production with a $100 million marketing campaign, which included a commercial during the Super Bowl, and numerous tie-ins. Plus, Walt Disney executives timed the release right. Over the next few weeks, there will be little competition in the family film market as many kids in the United States will be on school breaks, and likely to head to theaters. In 2010, Disney released similarly-pitched hit "Alice in Wonderland" which enjoyed global ticket sales of $1 billion. But Disney flopped with last year's effort. The $250 million Mars epic "John Carter" forced the company to take a financial loss. The box office needs some Oz magic right now. According to boxofficemojo.com, ticket sales saw their slowest February in over a decade due to absence of appealing films and the comparisons get harder from here with 2012 being a record year for Tinseltown.
