Afghans celebrate New Year

March 21 - New Year celebrations held in Kabul and Mazar-I-Sharif. Sharon Reich reports.

It's time to ring in Spring in Afghanistan. Thousands gather at holy sites in Kabul and Mazar-I-Sharif to celebrate the New Year also known as Nowruz, which originates from a Persian tradition, held each year on March 21st. (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) RAMISH AHMADI, A RESIDENT OF KABUL, SAYING: "Today is a glorious day. All the people have gathered here to celebrate the New Year. I am so happy because this gathering of people shows our national unity and I wish a happy new year to all our people." The celebration will be marked with flag raising ceremonies and traditional dances throughout the country.
