Former South African President Nelson Mandela celebrates his 90th birthday. According to a government statement, the now-94-year-old anti-apartheid leader has been admitted to hospital with a recurrence of a lung infection. Mandela spent nearly three weeks in hospital last December with a lung infection and after surgery to remove gallstones. It was his longest stay in hospital since his release in 1990 from prison where he served 27 years for conspiring to overthrow the white-minority apartheid government. A hero to many, Mandela became South Africa's first black president. He is known throughout the world as a towering statesman who led his country through bloodshed and turmoil to democracy. His fragile health prevents him from making public appearances, although he has continued to receive high-profile visitors, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
