Mandela on the mend

March 30 - South Africa's Nelson Mandela is comfortable and breathing without difficulty, a government spokesman says. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

Former South African leader Nelson Mandela is on the mend as he responds to treatment for pneumonia according to government spokesman Mac Maharaj. (SOUNDBITE) (English) GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, MAC MAHARAJ, SAYING: "Doctors advised that Madiba had developed a pleural effusion which has since been tapped and this has now resulted in his being able to breath without difficulty. Madiba continues to respond to treatment and is comfortable." Outside his former home in Soweto the media is out in force as the 94-year old statesman spent his third night in hospital. South Africans send him their best. (SOUNDBITE) (English/Zulu) SOWETO RESIDENT, LITHA DAVASHE SAYING: "I would say, Tata, please get well, and we are looking forward to you and to us, you are like our father, like our father. (SOUNDBITE) (English) JONATHAN MOORE, MUSEUM VISITOR FROM SOUTH AFRICA, SAYING: "As a South African we are all worried about his health and we would like to see him recover from whatever is worrying him now. I know he is old and his age is against his body, but I wish him the best and a soon recovery." Many South Africans are including Mandela in their prayers over the Easter weekend, one of the most important dates of the Christian calendar.
