"Evil Dead" frightens the competition at the box office

April 07 - The latest celebrity news including ''Evil Dead's'' strong showing at the weekend box office and ''Star Trek's'' phaser finds its mark at a Hollywood auction. John Russell reports.

"Evil Dead," the blood-drenched remake of the 1981 horror classic, scared up 26 million dollars (USD) in its first weekend to win the box office race.
The supernatural story of five twenty-something friends who battle demons in a remote cabin, "Evil Dead" far surpassed industry projections of about 20 million for the film.
Last weekend's box office leader, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," fought its way into a virtual tie with animated Stone Age comedy "The Croods," now in its third week in theaters, with each taking in 21.1 million, according to estimates from Hollywood.com's box office division.
Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. attended the world premiere of his film Iron Man 3 in Beijing on Saturday (April 6). Downey walked the red carpet in a hall connected to the Forbidden City, the vast former residence of China's emperors.
Two Republican members of Congress have asked the U.S. Treasury Department for information on what type of license American pop star Beyonce and rapper husband Jay Z obtained for a high-profile trip to Cuba to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
In Washington this week, the State Department said it had no prior knowledge of the visit. A spokeswoman said that if the celebrity couple failed to obtain a license for their trip, they could be exposed to a fine.
A number of highly sought after Hollywood memorabilia went on the auction block this weekend. The highlight of the auction included the sale of Star Trek William Shatner's Pilot Laser Rifle which sold for a record 231,000 dollars.
