Like fellow celebrities Angelina Jolie and Madonna, Katy Perry is volunteering her time for humanitarian causes.
The singer traveled to Madagascar last week as part of her role as a UNICEF ambassador. The trip was meant to bring attention to the situation of children in the tropical island country, one of the poorest in the world and still recovering from a political crisis that began in 2009.
Perry visited a UNICEF-supported pre-school and a primary school built to enable children to go back to school.
SOUNDBITE Katy Perry saying:
"An education is such an incredible opportunity, most kids don't get the opportunity to be educated sometimes that's because of their families, or having to help out or having to make a living at a very young age. Or it's cultural or there isn't a school that's provided for them. So I think it's an incredible, wonderful, miracle of an opportunity to have a school here on top of this mountain and I think the fact that they walk 45 minutes at 6 o'clock in the morning, and it's 2013, is a testament to how appreciative they are about their education."
Perry's trip also included visiting a child protection center and met with children and young mothers receiving support and counseling.
