A letter written by the late Beatles singer John Lennon to his bandmate Paul McCartney will be part of an auction featuring more than 250 letters written by famous figures up for sale by the auction house Profiles in History. This scathing two page draft defending Yoko Ono was never sent out, but is still expected to fetch between 40,000 to 60,000 U.S. dollars. The five figure price tag is a bargain when you look at how rare written correspondence is becoming, says Joe Maddalena, owner of Profiles In History. SOUNDBITE: Joe Maddalena, President and Owner of Profiles in History, Saying (English) "Today everything is electronic. Everything is a message or a text. So what's going to be saved? A chip? What are you going to collect, a hard drive? So people are realizing that letters, if you want to understand somebody's thought process or know somebody, read their written word." This pencil written letter records Marilyn Monroe's desperate state of mind when she wrote to her mentor Lee Strasberg in the last days of her life. "I think I'm going crazy," it reads. The letter is expected to go under the hammer for up to 30,000 dollars. Other documents up for sale include writings by Winston Churchill, former U.S. Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and a leather-bound photo album gifted by Benito Mussolini to Adolf Hitler detailing Mussolini's first visit to Germany and Hitler's second visit to Italy. The auction is scheduled for May 30 and is expected fetch up to five million dollars. Eager buyers can place their bids online.
