More than 70,000 people have been killed in more than two years of violence. The question arising now -- are chemical weapons being used. U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel weighed in at trip to the United Arab Emirates. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY CHUCK HAGEL, IN AN EXCHANGE WITH REPORTERS, AND SAYING: "The U.S. intelligence community assesses with some degree of varying confidence that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons on a small scale in Syria, specifically the chemical agent sarin." The disclosure, made by the White House in a letter to Congress moves the US closer to declaring that Syria has crossed a "red line" (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DEFENSE SECRETARY CHUCK HAGEL, IN AN EXCHANGE WITH REPORTERS, AND SAYING: "We still have some uncertainties about what was used, what kind of chemical was used, where it was used, who used it." The findings follow similar reports by Israeli intelligence analysts and the governments of Britain and France. As the debate goes on -- on the ground the body count grows with no side holding the upper hand.
