The Proms is the most quintessentially British celebration of classical music, which is about to be invaded by this... Punk veterans The Stranglers have been the surprise addition to this prestigious music festival. Their famous tunes will be played by a full orchestra turning punk into classical. At a very English riverside setting, the all-important bassist from The Stranglers, Jean-Jacques Brunel, decided to talk about how he felt about receiving this rather bizarre invitation over a pint of cider. SOUNDBITE: Jean-Jacques Burnel, Stranglers Bassist, saying (English): "Well I think the term is gobsmacked frankly. Pretty gobsmacked that we should be asked. I can't think of many more prestigious events in the world musical calendar really." The Stranglers are known as one of the instigators of British punk music because of their uncompromising style and aggressive attitudes. But has time mellowed them? SOUNDBITE: Jean-Jacques Burnel, Stranglers Bassist, saying (English): "Yes we have probably mellowed yes. We are not looking for punch-ups all the time. I think I can count on one hand the number of fights I have had with other members of the band - that's all of them together. I think that's about five fights or arguments or set-tos." (Reporter: "In forty years, that's no bad going is it?") "No it's pretty good. I think even successful marriages would find that difficult to come up with." The special classical-punk performance by The Stranglers is scheduled to take place on August 12th.
