Two jaguar cubs at the San Diego Zoo are turning one. Tikal and his sister Maderas charged at their special birthday gift, a cake made to special order. Zookeeper Kimberly Hyde. SOUNDBITE: Kimberly Hyde, Senior Zookeeper at San Diego Zoo, saying (English) "Well it's not your typical cake for a first year old but it's full of blood, some water and some pieces of beef heart." The cubs, both weighing two pounds or 900 grams at birth, have grown substantially in a year. They will eventually grow to be the largest cats in the Western Hemisphere and the third largest of the world's felines. Unfortunately, demand for their fur is one of the reasons this species is endangered. In addition, loss of habitat and human-jaguar conflicts have reduced populations throughout their range from North through South America.
