The Netherlands' new king Willem-Alexander and his family wave to crowds in Amsterdam. The 46-year-old, who began his reign on Tuesday, took up the throne after his mother Queen Beatrix formally abdicated, taking on the title of 'princess'. He is the first king of the Netherlands since 1890. Although the royal family has been largely stripped of its power, they remain a popular symbol for the Dutch people. But the celebrations weren't confined to the Netherlands. In Buenos Aires, residents partied late into the night, celebrating the Dutch king's wife, Queen Maxima, a former investment banker from Argentina. Revellers performed an impromptu tango to mark the special occasion. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) PRESIDENT OF ARGENTINA'S HOLLAND CLUB, DANIEL DAS, SAYING: "It's an honour for me as President of the Holland Club to host everyone on this special day with a unique festival and an "orange" experience. Today was a historic day for our countries." Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez also welcomed the new queen, saying her citizenship did not detract from her Latin American roots.
