ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) An ISAF spokesman confirms that five U.S. soldiers have been killed by a bomb in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar, capping off one of the bloodiest weeks for international forces this year. Five U.S. soldiers were killed by a bomb in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar on Saturday (May 4), a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, capping off one of the bloodiest weeks for international forces this year. "It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that today five American soldiers died following an attack with an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan," Brigadier General Gunter Katz told Reuters, who added that the incident would not alter the long term campaign in Afghanistan for ISAF. "It was a very difficult week for us, like I said, every soldier who dies here in Afghanistan is one too many. But again this will not have an effect on our overall campaign; we stay committed and will stay committed in this country to support the Afghans, also in the future." The attack underscored the dangers faced by the NATO-led ISAF, even as they hand over much of the fighting to the Afghans before a planned departure next year. Nineteen U.S. personnel have been killed in the last week in three air crashes and Saturday's bombing. Three British soldiers were also killed on Tuesday (April 30) by a roadside bomb in the southern province of Helmand. Kandahar authorities said the soldiers' vehicle struck an IED in Maiwand district, which borders Helmand province to the west and is considered one of the most volatile of Kandahar's districts. Last month, nine Afghan men working for a mine clearance organisation were taken captive by Taliban fighters there, though they were later released.
