Emergency crews in California say they're making some headway in their fight to control these wildfires. By nightfall on Friday containment was in place for about a fifth of the infernos. They're hoping slowing winds and higher humidity will also be allies in the battle. Even so it's expected to take until Monday to fully contain the flames. By Friday the fires had scorched their way through more than 111 square kilometres, or 43 square miles, of vegetation north west of Los Angeles. Some 4, 000 homes and a military base are feared to be at risk. A university campus has also been closed. It's a sudden start to California's fire season and predictions for the coming months aren't encouraging. Some forecasters are warning of a summer of high temperatures and drought through much of the U.S. West.
