Smoke rises on the Golan Heights after at least one mortar was thought to have landed near the Syrian border with Israel. Gunfire could also be heard on Tuesday in the area amid rising tensions after Sunday's Israeli airstrike on Syrian territory. A human rights organisation says more than 40 Syrian soldiers were killed and another 100 were missing after the air raid which Israel said targeted missiles destined for Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon. The mortar fire along the Golan Heights comes as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in Russia. His mission is to see if Russia and the United States can find a political solution to the Syrian crisis. Kerry is scheduled to meet with President Vladimir Putin to discuss a number of issues, including tensions between the Koreas. U.S.-Russia ties have been strained by Russia's support of Assad's government and what Washington views as a Russian crackdown on civil society and pro-democracy groups.
